Fire with Fire - written by Megan O'Neill & Orla Gartland. Released as a single in 2020 from this forthcoming album.
I wrote this song with fellow Irish singer-songwriter Orla Gartland, about women in the entertainment industry being batted against each other. There can be a lot of hostility and unhealthy competitiveness between women in the industry, I think because we've been conditioned to believe there are only a limited number of spaces for us, so we compete with other women for these limited spaces. There has been a shift, thankfully - in the past few years especially. And women are supporting each other on a massive scale which is amazing to see.
Alhough this song deals with women in the industry not being too kind to each other, I wanted the music video to be the opposite. The video I released for this song features a number of women in my life who I find incredible and inspiring.
If you’re trying to bring me down, you’re already below me
Climbing to the higher ground, just so you can show
That you’ve been here before
Tell me it’s not your first rodeo
But if you’re trying to bring me down, you’re already below me
I can see where this is going now we are
Fighting fire with fire, always ends with a burn
See your dress getting tighter, will you ever learn, ever learn
I’ll be here on the sidelines, just waiting my turn
I’d rather fail, than be runnin’, runnin’
If you’ve nothing nice to say, why don’t you try silence
So set in your ways, you got it down to a science
But you’ve been here before, I see it in the way you work the floor
I was warned about people like you, who tell me to follow everything that you do
I see where this is going, now we are
Fighting fire with fire, always ends with a burn
See your dress getting tighter, will you ever learn, ever learn
I’ll be here on the sidelines, just waiting my turn
I’d rather fail, than be runnin’, runnin’
I’d rather let it go
I’d rather lose it all
If I don’t know where I’m going to, or what the hell I’m meant to do
That’s okay
At least I wont be
Fighting fire with fire, always ends with a burn
See your dress getting tighter, will you ever learn…
I’ll be here on the sidelines, just waiting my turn
I’d rather fail, than be runnin’, runnin’
than be runnin’, runnin’
than be runnin’, runnin’
than be runnin’, runnin’

There is soul music...
and there is music for the soul.
Danni Nicholls deserves to be a household name, her music familiar in every household collection.
For a live album to pack this much of a punch says so much about the artist.
Her songwriting. Her beautiful voice. Her self confessed vulnerability and fragility.
This truly is a piece of musical art. Brian Doig
